Five tennis rackets fanned out on a wooden court floor near a red line

Summer in Northern Connecticut is the perfect time to get moving, try a new activity, and connect with your community. Whether you want to revitalize your fitness routine, find a healthy family activity, or discover a new social outlet, tennis is the ultimate solution.

As a locally-owned, women-owned small business, the Ellington Racquet Club (ERC) is dedicated to bringing the joy of racquet sports to our community. If you have been waiting for the right moment to pick up a racquet, here are five fantastic reasons to step onto the court this summer.

1. Experience an Unbeatable Full-Body Workout

Forget the monotony of the treadmill. Tennis is a dynamic, high-energy sport that keeps you moving and provides an exceptional mix of cardiovascular and strength training.

  • Boosts Cardiovascular Health: Quick sprints and lateral movements safely elevate your heart rate.

  • Builds Core Strength: Powerful swings and serves naturally engage your core muscles.

  • Enhances Agility and Balance: Constantly shifting directions improves your overall athletic coordination.

2. Build Lifelong Community Connections

Tennis is an inherently social sport. When you start playing, you instantly join a welcoming, active community. ERC is proud to serve as a community hub for Northern Connecticut residents.

Here are three simple steps to get connected at ERC:

  1. Sign Up for a Clinic: Join a beginner or intermediate clinic to learn alongside peers at your skill level.

  2. Join a League: Participate in structured match play to meet neighbors and challenge yourself.

  3. Attend Social Events: Hang out in our comfortable spectator seating areas and connect with fellow players between matches.

3. Enjoy a Sport for the Whole Family

Tennis is one of the rare sports that truly spans generations. It is an incredible way to unplug and bond with your children, your spouse, or even your grandparents. At ERC, we offer programs tailored to every age and skill level.

  • Junior Memberships: $199/yr for youth players.

  • Adult Memberships: $395/yr (includes limited pickleball).

  • Family Memberships: $790/yr for the whole household.

4. Sharpen Your Mind and Relieve Stress

Tennis is often described as physical chess, and the mental benefits of the game are just as powerful as the physical ones. When you step onto the court, the demands of the game force you to be entirely present.

Tracking the fast-paced ball, anticipating your opponent’s next move, and managing your court strategy keeps your brain sharp and improves your mental clarity. This intense focus acts as a massive stress reliever. By forcing you to leave your daily worries off the court and focus entirely on the rally in front of you, tennis provides a healthy, much-needed emotional release. Add in the natural endorphin rush that comes from a great shot, and you will walk off the court with a noticeably elevated mood.

5. Play in Perfect Conditions in a State-of-the-Art Facility

Let's face it: New England summer weather can be incredibly unpredictable. Between sweltering humidity, scorching afternoon heat, and sudden thunderstorms, trying to schedule outdoor matches can be a frustrating gamble. At the newly opened Ellington Racquet Club, you never have to check the weather app. You are guaranteed pristine, comfortable playing conditions every single time.

Opened in Summer 2024, our facility was designed from the ground up with the ultimate player experience in mind. You can say goodbye to blinding glare thanks to our premium indirect lighting that ensures you never lose sight of the ball. Our spacious courts feature ample baseline room, allowing you to comfortably chase down deep, defensive shots without feeling cramped. After your match, you can refresh in our spotlessly clean locker rooms and relax in our modern lounge area.
